Google's Downtown West Gains Momentum
Google's Downtown West project in San Jose, after a year of uncertainty, appears to be moving forward. Initially paused in April 2023, the project saw renewed activity with resumed demolition in February and discussions about affordable housing in June. This massive mixed-use development, announced in 2019 and approved in 2021, will transform 80 acres around Diridon Station into 7.3 million square feet of office space, 4,000 residential units (25% affordable), 500,000 square feet of retail, and 15 acres of public parks.
The Mercury News previously reported that the project is expected to create 20,000 to 25,000 jobs and bring significant economic benefits to downtown businesses that eagerly anticipate the influx of new workers and residents. Strategically located around Diridon Station, the development will provide easy access to Caltrain, and future BART and high-speed rail services.
Despite earlier setbacks due to Google's cost-cutting measures. Recent developments suggest that the tech giant is committed to seeing Downtown West come to fruition. This project symbolizes a significant investment in San Jose’s future, promising to revitalize the area and create a thriving urban center.
